Hello everyone,

I hope you are doing well and having a great week so far! Uncharacteristically, today has been a slow day for me in the Sports for Nature offices. I’m waiting on a few things to get approved and placed on our Website so I decided to write a bit about simple things we can all do when we attend sporting events that collectively will make a big impact on the environment:

Green tip # 1 – When buying food at stadiums, please reduce the amount of napkins you use. So many times I see people buy a hot dog and take 10 napkins, but only really use 1 or 2 of them. Next time, try to think how many napkins you will really use before grabbing a ton of them.

Green tip # 2 – If the stadium or venue you are attending has recycling bins available, please use them! Remember to try to recycle all cans, glass containers, bottles, etc, that you and your friends used during the event or even beforehand in case you have tailgated.

Green tip # 3 – In the middle of a game or match, when you use the bathroom, please remember to not leave water running while washing your hands. Try to minimize the waste of water and you will be making a valuable contribution to everyone’s future, since I suspect that not too many years will go by before potable water scarcity in the world becomes a major issue.

Green tip # 4 – Try to use public transportation to get to the venue where the sporting event is being held at. This will minimize the use of fossil fuels from cars on the streets and have a positive impact on the environment. And if you use your car, try to stay under the speed limit and use the AC or heat only when needed. If you do this you will not only help the environment, but also save money, a win-win situation!

Green tip # 5 – Also related to the transportation to and from the sporting event venue, if you are going with a group of friends, please try to carpool. It’s more fun, you’ll save money, and help nature!

Green tip # 6 – When you go to a sporting venue or if you play in a local league; if you have the opportunity to leave a comment, feedback or speak to the directors, please let them know that you support the environment and would like to see green actions implemented. You would be surprised what a simple comment can do to keep uniting sports and the environment. Feedback from customers many times goes a long way!

Ok, so these are the green tips for today. In future blogs I will try to provide more green tips that can help take steps to help the environment through sports, one little bit at a time! The idea is to get people that love sports to constantly think of green actions they can take while enjoying their favorite sport.

Go green!
